Part One: Initial Consultation
Sherise’s deck had done its job for years. It was small, basic, and fully open to the elements. But “doing its job” really just meant the family had somewhere to stand outside. And the moment the sun got too hot, or it rained, everyone had to go back inside.
She wanted more than that: a real outdoor space where the family could actually sit and spend time without having to endure the heat, rain, or bugs.
But before we make that happen, we needed to see what they were working with.
Here's everything we found during the initial consultation...
Small, aging deck
The deck felt cramped, and the boards were in disrepair.
Uncomfortable
Without shade or screening, the space couldn’t be used most days.
Outdated railings
The original railings needed to come down before new framing could go in.
Structural unknowns
Existing joists required a full inspection before the new frame could be attached.
Part Two: Design, Planning, Permitting
The design had two goals: expand the footprint and tie everything together under one roof. We had to figure out how to take what was already there, expand it, cover it, and screen it. So, we drew custom structural plans, sent them to an engineer for approval, and then submitted everything for permitting before construction began.
Part Three: The Time Schedule
Once we got to work on-site, construction on this project ran from June 9 to July 6. That’s under four weeks from start to finish.
May
Proposal issued May 12. Sherise approved it the next morning.
Early June
Crew broke ground June 9, digging new footers and demoing the old railing. Concrete posts were poured by June 11.
Mid-June
The gable roof cover was framed and attached to the house by June 12. Roofing shingles, soffit, and fascia were installed by June 16, alongside the concrete stair footers.
Late June
Staircase framing, ceiling board staining, and polyurethane treatment completed. By July 1, most ceiling boards were installed and the project passed its framing and electrical rough-in inspections.
Early July
Siding on the fireplace finished, final electrical completed, site prepared for final inspection. Project done July 6.
The Finished Result
What used to be a small, weathered platform is now a full outdoor room, ready to use in the rain or the heat.

This project included:

- Demolition of the old deck structure
- Re-decking the existing 256 sq. ft. frame
- New 243 sq. ft. pressure-treated deck addition
- A 420 sq. ft. closed gable roof cover

- Two aluminum storm doors
- Custom stained tongue-and-groove ceiling
- Aluminum balusters for the railings
- New stairs with a 4-inch broom-finish concrete pad
Pressure-Treated Deck Addition
Adding 243 sq. ft. required new structural posts, new double-band boards, and new joists, all built from pressure-treated lumber rated to withstand moisture and ground contact for decades. The original deck and the addition now function as one continuous surface.
Gable Roof Cover
The centerpiece of the entire project, the 420 sq. ft. gable roof cover, is attached to the existing roofline seamlessly. Shingles, soffit, fascia, and gutters were all included so the finished product looks like it was always part of the home.
ScreenEze Screening System
ScreenEze uses an aluminum channel that locks the screen fabric under tension and is backed by a 10-year warranty. The result is a snug, clean wall of screening that doesn’t rattle in the wind or buckle after a few seasons.
